A smart way to build a healthier diet is to start an organic garden. However, you will need to put forth an effort in order to make it grow. Perhaps you are hesitating about where to begin.

As an alternative to keeping your entire home that warm, consider getting heat lamps for your organic plants.
Keep your gardening tools close by to maximize gardening efficiency. Keep the tools in a big bucket, or store them in strong pockets in your pants. Have shears, a trowel, gloves and other commonly used garden tools portable and easy to access.
Add three inches of mulch to your flower beds. Using this much mulch retards weed growth, locks in moisture, and ensures that your plants are well-nourished. What’s more, your garden will look professional all year.
Try to work as efficiently as possible when gardening. Don’t waste your time by searching high and low for that packet of seeds or spade. Before you start work in the garden, make sure you have the necessary tools, and always remember to put them away when you are finished. If you have recently planted seeds in your organic garden, you should regularly aerate the soil by using your hands to gently sift it. Believe it or not, aerating the soil in this manner can actually make your seedlings grow larger.
Brick, stone or untreated wood is great for building raised beds. Make sure the wood you use is untreated and rot resistant. Good choices are cypress, cedar and locust. In a vegetable garden, never use treated wood, as the chemicals can leach out into the soil and food crops. If your existing garden structure contains treated wood, at least take the time to make a plastic lining beneath the soil.
Your soil will be healthier if you add mulch. Mulch will protect and nourish the soil. This protective effect is especially important during the summer, as it protects the roots from the effects of the heat. By reducing the evaporation rate of your soil, you will not need to water as often. This also helps control the weeds.
